Het gebruik van zijn eigen lichaam in zijn werken is fundamenteel voor deze auteur, omdat het lichaam volgens hem een directe brug is van communicatie tussen kunst en het toeschouwende publiek.
Zhang Huan heeft geëxposeerd in de Verenigde Staten, Europa en Azië. Hij heeft prijzen gewonnen zoals de Robb Yearly Artist uit China in 2010 en het Legion of Honor uit Frankrijk in 2014.

Zhang Huan's 2007 work, The Three-Legged Buddha, carries out Buddhist philosophy, ritual and the artist's idea that the offline scene is constantly revitalized through contact with the past. This incredible sculpture is over 28 feet tall, 48 feet in diameter and weighs over 25,000 pounds.
The work was originally made by more than 100 craftsmen in the artist's studio in China, using welded and hammered copper and steel materials. Before its permanent installation at the Storm King Arts Center, the Three-Legged Buddha was restored at the UAP Rock Tavern factory (formerly known as Polich Tallix) to ensure its longevity to this day.

My work is a whole, with my outlook on life and world running through it. Now my creative media and methods are diverse, the form of expression is different from the previous works, but the core remains the same, because my DNA will not change.
The main context is related to my cultural background and living condition. My inspiration comes from the most ordinary and insignificant things in daily life, such as eating, sleeping and working every day. 我信奉佛教，是在家居士。藏传佛教的终极目的是要解决生与死的问题，西藏人每天祈祷朝圣，都是为了来世。我爱西藏的宗教和文化，相信人有来生，更关注今世人类的生存状态。受藏传佛教影响，命、欲望、死亡常出现在我的作品中。（ 文：张洹 ）
I believe in Buddhism and am a layman. The ultimate goal of Tibetan Buddhism is to solve the problem of life and death. Tibetans pray and make pilgrimages every day for the afterlife. I love the religion and culture of Tibet, believe that people have an afterlife, and pay more attention to the current human existence. 我只看重作品传达的信息是否与我的内心相符。我偏爱一种自然的东西，一种鲜活的东西；或者说是很原始的……很原始的一种偏激，一种颠覆。
我希望作品带给人们更多的思考。我觉得神性就是人性，神的形象和人的形象都代表了最普遍的物质存在和精神存在。尽管我质疑神的存在和作用，但是在当代艺术世界，神性仍然可以成为让人警醒的一个因素，使人摒弃兽性和杂念，善待一切。有心而发，由天注定。（ 文：张洹 ）I only care if the message is consistent with my heart. I prefer a natural thing, a living thing; Or rather primitive... Very primitive kind of radical, kind of subversive.I hope it makes people think more. I think divinity is human nature, and the image of God and the image of man represent the most universal material and spiritual existence. Although I question the existence and function of God, in the contemporary art world, God can still be a warning factor for people to abandon animal nature and distractions and treat everything well. Berlin Buddha
This aluminium sculpture is the first component of Berlin Buddha. The second component is an ash Buddha made by casting dry ash to the interior of the aluminium sculpture. These two sculptures will be installed facing each other. As time goes by, the environment will affect the work, as the floor will tremble with movement, ash Buddha will also change and fall into piece.
